Our Heritage
Step back in time. Learn about the rich, resilient history of Ilfracombe Golf Club spanning over 130 years on the clifftops of North Devon.
More Than A Century of Golf
Ilfracombe Golf Club boasts a resilient and fascinating heritage that is deeply intertwined with the landscape of the North Devon Coast. Since our founding in 1892, we have welcomed golfers seeking to test their game on a layout unlike any other in the South West. Famously known for offering "Sea Views from Every Tee", our heritage reflects our connection to Hele Bay and the rugged coastline.
From supporting the war effort in 1914 to hosting regional medal competitions in the late 19th century, we are proud to preserve our historical legacy while offering modern facilities to players and visitors alike.
The Foundation
The club was officially established, beginning modestly in a field in the St. Brannock’s Park area of Ilfracombe. It was soon relocated to Mullacott Cross, situated approximately 400 feet above sea level, offering panoramic views of the Welsh Coast and Bristol Channel.
Early Medal Play
Early club records document competitive gold and silver medal tournaments being held, establishing the club as a prominent regional hub for golf on the North Devon coast.
The WWI Plough-Over
During the First World War, the club dedicated parts of its fairways to the war effort. The coastal land was ploughed over to grow crops and raise livestock for local food production.
Restoration & Post-War Reopening
Following the conclusion of the war, the ploughed fairways were meticulously restored, and the course reopened to welcome members and holiday visitors returning to the North Devon coast.
The James Braid Influence
While the original course architect remains anonymous, historical accounts suggest potential layout revisions in the 1920s by the legendary five-time Open champion James Braid. This era defined the iconic layout, featuring crossing fairways at holes 7/8 and 10/12.
Preserving the Legacy
Today, the club stands as a modern, friendly par-69 challenge. In honour of our history, the clubhouse bar and dining facility is named the **"1892 Bar & Restaurant"**. The narrated hole flyovers by the legendary Peter Alliss immortalise our course layout for generations to come.
